  • (Deseret News) Salt Lake City building officials gave the 22-story high rise at 222 S. Main a certificate of occupancy Monday, but it looks like few workers will be occupying it for now.

The building's developer, Hamilton Partners of the Chicago area, has only 20 percent of the building leased, said Bruce Bingham, a founding partner of Hamilton, at a roundtable discussion of downtown development Tuesday. That's the same occupancy rate that was reported in April.

"We anticipate folks will start moving into the building in January," Bingham said.

  • (Deseret News) Salt Lake County's office vacancies rose to 15 percent at the end of the third quarter, up from 13.6 percent in the second quarter, according to figures from Commerce CRG.

Class B and C buildings have been hardest-hit, with each showing a 35-percent increase in vacancies in the past year.

Commerce CRG also said that industrial lease rates are declining. Rents fell about 10 percent by the third quarter, compared with a 23.4 percent rise in 2008.

Commerce CRG, based in Salt Lake City, has five Utah offices and a Las Vegas office.

  • SOUTH SALT LAKE (Deseret News) — University of Utah graduate student Sarah Morrow lives on the edge of her industrial suburb, tucked between the county jail and a regional transit station on one side and busy 3900 South on the other.

But Morrow recently explained to one of her classes that she and her neighbors at the River Run Condominiums feel a sense of quiet and seclusion despite the hubbub, all because of a 62-acre vacant field and a lack of immediate access to the main roads.
