  • Cedar City (Salt Lake Tribune) » Since 1939, the Cedar Valley spreading west and north of Cedar City has dropped 100 feet and the only way to stop or slow the process is replenish the underlying aquifer with at least as much water as is being discharged through pumping.

    That was one of the statistics the Utah Geological Survey delivered to the Central Iron County Water Conservancy District at its board meeting Thursday night in Cedar City.

  • CEDAR CITY (Deseret News) — Retired military veterans are holding a Town Hall meeting Friday to launch a public campaign for a Veterans' Assistance nursing home.

    Marine Corps veteran Chuck Hoepfner recently told the City Council that the $17 million project would be a 110-bed nursing home on a six- to eight-acre lot; however, the project needs more community and financial support for it to become reality.

  • (Deseret News) Long before he died last Saturday, famed Utah landscape artist Jim Jones pledged his home and his final project, which contained 18 of his best landscapes, to Southern Utah University. Now that gift will help the Cedar City university fulfil a commitment to build an art museum, the only one south of Springville.

  • Jim Jones has spent the better part of 33 years gazing on Utah and Arizona's redrock vistas during a career replicating them on canvas. The Springdale-based artist has produced hundreds of landscape paintings, including many depicting iconic landforms of Grand Canyon and Zion national parks.

  • It will be spectacle today as long-time residents gather for a glimpse of history crumbling into rubble. Perhaps even cameras and camcorders will document the event as Southern Utah University razes the 9,491 square-foot life science building to prepare for the construction of the 42,385-square-foot Walter M. Gibson Science Center.

  • CEDAR CITY - The Iron County Board of Realtors donated $10,000 to the Iron County Care and Share Wednesday to help with construction of new facilities for the nonprofit organization.

  • Construction on an aquatic center in Cedar City began in early July. The center, located at 2090 West Royal Hunt Drive, will be owned by the city. The facility will be approximately 64,000 square feet. CMBG and Carter Enterprises are the developers on the project. The expected completion date for the aquatic center is May 2010.

  • Chuck Marshall is considering a master plan community on 206 acres in Cedar City. Marshall has proposed building 1,200 residential units near 2400 North Lund Highway. There would also be a possibility for commercial development. The project is in the preliminary planning process. Ron Larson is the engineer.

  • CEDAR CITY - After months of planning and construction, utilizing city-wide donations and cooperative efforts, the new hospitality house at Valley View Medical Center is finally open.

  • CEDAR CITY - The Iron County Commission on Monday, taking into consideration the projected economic situation, decided not to match funds requested for a Cedar City fire station grant at this time.

  • CEDAR CITY - The new Iron County Sheriff's Office Animal Shelter on Iron Springs Road will be up and running by the first week of July, thanks to the Iron County Jail inmate work crew.

  • Ron Larsen of Insite Engineering will convert an already existing building owned by Wayne Decker into business condominiums. Coal Creek Commercial Condominiums, 12 total, will be located at 400 West and Coal Creek Road in Cedar City. The Cedar City Planning Commission approved the preliminary plan for the project.

  • Cedar City » A deep aquifer, filled with prehistoric water that has filtered through a porous formation of Navajo sandstone, slumbers deep underground in southern Utah, waiting to be tapped.

    At least that is what a retired geology professor believes. E. Blair Maxfield wants a test well drilled to confirm or discredit his theory-- and state officials acknowledge he could be right -- about the uncharted aquifer that could extend east of Cedar City and north of Zion National Park.

  • CEDAR CITY » Iron County planners are considering whether a proposed development on one of the state's largest mapped landslides would be safe.

    Geologists are studying whether the landslide on Cedar Mountain is still active.

    County Engineer Steve Platt says that needs to be determined before the Iron County Planning Commission can decide whether to allow the development to be built.

    A geologist hired by the county says so far there is not enough data to determine whether the landslide is stable.

  • CEDAR CITY - A decade ago an open access, fiber optic network was not thought possible for rural areas. However, as of Thursday, Cedar City has been fully outfitted with 70 miles of cable. The cable, installed by Utah InterLinx Communications, will allow high-speed, redundancy in communication services for every business and household in its boundaries.

    Evan Thompson-Principal of Tuscan, Ariz., is looking to develop 2,200 acres in Cedar City using a Green Build. The Cordero Master Plan Community is still in the preliminary phases, but construction is scheduled to begin on June 1.
