  •  (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) Despite the tough economic times and budget shortfalls in most government entities, construction remains on schedule for the Kearns skate park.

    Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon made that announcement at a Kearns town hall meeting on Feb. 2.

    CraCar Construction Company began this project in August 2009 and will soon resume construction (weather permitting) with an anticipated completion date sometime in early June.

  • (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) Jan. 31 marked the groundbreaking ceremony at the new site for New Pilgrim Baptist Church, located at 5133 South Heath Ave. in Kearns. The ceremony was well attended by many local dignitaries and members of the congregation.

    NPBC was founded in 1922 as an African-American congregation. The church prides itself in being established as a multi-cultural congregation now serving more than 500 members from 30 nations, with services in both English and Spanish. Corey J. Hodges serves as the senior pastor.

  • (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) The first section of the Mountain View Corridor on the valley’s west side will now stretch further north than expected, all the way to 5400 South in Kearns. That was the decision announced at a Utah Transportation Commission meeting on Oct. 14

  • (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) The irony was not lost on Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon as he helped break ground for the Kearns skate park on Sept. 28. Standing near the Utah Olympic Oval that will border the park, Corroon pointed out that “some of the greatest athletes skate on ice over there, and many other great athletes will skate on concrete here.”

  • (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) St. Francis Xavier School is moving ahead with plans to build a 12,000 square foot addition and tear down the old A-frame Catholic church next to the school,after the Kearns Planning and Zoning Committee approved the project on Sept. 2.

    The new addition will include classrooms, offices, a new library, and restrooms for the school’s 300 students and faculty. In order to replace the parking stalls that will be lost because of the new building, the old church will be demolished.

  • (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) Kearns residents will soon have a few new reasons to go to Oquirrh Park. Construction has begun on a new skate park and soccer field, and improvements to Ed Mayne Street and a new parking lot are not far behind.

    Local contractor CraCar Construction Company won the construction bid for both the skate park project and the Oquirrh Park Improvement Project. They began tearing up turf for the new soccer field in early September and hired subcontractor California Skate Parks to begin construction on the skate park immediately.

  • (Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) Ground should be broken in October for Salt Lake Community College’s Center for New Media. It will be built on the college’s South City campus on State Street. The $25 million project will be over 120,000 square feet once completed, expected by the summer of 2011.

    The building will house studies of Digital Design, Communication Technology, Broadcasting, Entertainment Arts, Film, Web Design, Animation and Music Innovation.

  • Despite the slowdown in the economy, cities west of I-15 are experiencing the advantage of locale and the expansion of commerce through economic development.

  • (TAYLORSVILLE/KEARNS JOURNAL) -- It’s been a long time coming, but a skate park in Kearns will soon be a reality. Construction on the first phase of the Oquirrh Park master plan is slated to start at the end of the summer.

    “We will probably have a contractor selected by August and someone out there working by Aug. 1 or thereabouts,” said Walt Gilmore, a planner with Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. “It could change, certainly, but that’s what we’re working toward right now.”
