6 UDOT projects in Lehi: Short-term challenges, long-term relief

LEHI (Daily Herald) -- In one corner of Lehi on Wednesday, two huge cranes lifted 80-ton bridge segments into place on Mill Pond road as part of the Pioneer Crossing project. In another, reconstruction of state Route 92 is under way.

In the west, there's Mountain View's 2100 North project tying in Redwood Road with an east-west corridor to Interstate 15. In the east, there's the installation of electronic tolling for the expressway at Lehi's Main Street I-15 interchange. Through the middle is the I-15 corridor expansion.

"The last project is repaving I-15 between north of Lehi's Main Street to approximately 1200 West; that will be happening this summer as well," UDOT spokesman Scott Thompson said. It takes him more than a few breaths to list all six transportation projects in the city this summer. "Lehi is definitely going to be the most impacted city."

Total cost for Utah Department of Transportation's Utah County projects is $2.284 billion and total miles under construction in Lehi is about 15 to 17 miles, not including I-15's CORE project.

"While we understand that the current construction will create myriad short-term challenges and delays, we are pleased that the solutions will bring long-term relief to traffic gridlock for many years to come," Lehi city administrator Jamie Davidson said during an interview.

To help get around or through the construction, UDOT has partnered with local chambers of commerce to present coping solutions for traffic congestion caused by construction this summer. Approximately 50 to 100 people attended each meeting, primarily business owners. The presentation is also available for viewing at www.udot.utah.gov.
