$640K in CDBG requests OK'd by Logan Council
(Herald Journal) More than $640,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding will go toward 17 local projects this year.
The Logan Municipal Council approved the final 2010 allocations in its Tuesday meeting. The Cache Community Food Pantry will receive the largest chunk of funding, $100,000, with the city's public works center receiving the second most, $85,000, and Neighborhood Nonprofit Housing Corporation being the recipient of $75,000.
The money comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This year, 30 local organizations requested a total of $1.67 million.
Cache Community Food Pantry Executive Director Matthew Whitaker said the $100,000 from Logan city will go toward an approximately $600,000 project to expand the facility. He's optimistic other grants will come through to cover the remaining costs.
"We're going to demolish the office building we have here and build another smaller office and bigger warehouse," he said.
The additional warehouse will almost double the pantry's current capacity.
"We're just tripping over what we have," Whitaker said, adding that the building was not designed to be used as it is now. "If it's buried, it's out of sight, out of mind."
