Black Ridge Reservoir construction complete

(SOUTH VALLEY JOURNAL) Talk of the Black Ridge Reservoir, 5390 West 14940 South, began over a decade ago and the project is just about to become a reality.

“Discussions of this pond have been going on since 1998,” said Justun Edwards, Herriman water department manager. The reservoir construction is complete and water started flowing into it in early June.

The reservoir is a joint venture between the cities of Herriman and Riverton to provide homes and public areas in those communities with secondary water.

The name Black Ridge came from the original project design team and the name just stuck, according to Jeff Hawker, Riverton’s assistant city manager

Funding for the reservoir itself was paid through bonds issued by Herriman and Riverton. The $7.5 million for the project was a 50/50 venture between the two cities.

“The Black Ridge Reservoir is the first step in a planned citywide effort to conserve our valuable water resources with a much-needed secondary water system,” said Herriman Mayor J. Lynn Crane.

Filling the reservoir has been a slow process. The 62-acre feet capacity was filled a foot at a time to ensure the stability of the structure, according to Nicole Martin, Herriman public information officer.
