Committee trying to preserve old Pleasant Grove church
PLEASANT GROVE (Daily Herald) -- Several longtime residents are working to save a beloved landmark in their city.
The old white church, as it is often called, was built in the Manila area of Pleasant Grove in 1896, and the grass-roots committee, called the Pleasant Grove Manila Heritage Committee, was formed to help keep it there.
"Many of our committee members have ancestors who actually helped build the old white church, and the rest of us have lived here many years, and the building has been a big part of our lives," said committee Chairman John Linebaugh.
Last week, its members took the matter to the City Council.
"We can't do it all alone," Linebaugh said. "We'd like the help from our city."
Committee representatives said they would like the city to partner with them to possibly purchase the church and use it for city programs.
"We're not trying to replace the community center," said committee member Mike Chamberlain. "This could be a different kind of center."
Some possible uses, according to Chamberlain, would be arts, performing arts and classes. "The building lends itself to many different uses," he added.
