Community college coming to Herriman

(South Valley Journal) Herriman City has a high school in the works. Now it's looking like a college campus just may also be in its future.

Salt Lake Community College is looking to expand by building a campus in Herriman on a 90-acre parcel located at 5400 West 12000 South. Thirty of the 90 acres are being donated by an anonymous land owner.

The college has recognized this area in its master planning.

"Growth in the valley is primarily in that location. It's the fastest growing part in our geographical community," SLCC Director of Public Relations Joy Tlou said.

The city of Herriman has grown from 800 residents to 21,000 residents over the last 10 years.

The city's master planning is one element that makes Herriman attractive, Tlou said.

The site is planned to be accessible from the future Mountain View Corridor, along with a transit corridor via a proposed TRAX station. The college will also be surrounded by affordable high density housing.

As of last July, Herriman had 5,600 single family households with an additional 784 apartments. It is projected that by the year 2040 the city will reach 100,000 households.

SLCC's multi-campus college services more than 60,000 students each year, making it the largest institution of higher education in Utah.
