The Counter restaurant closes at The Gateway

(Salt Lake Tribune) The Counter gourmet burger restaurant in Salt Lake City has closed.

The outlet had been the Los Angeles-based chain's first and only Utah store when it opened at The Gateway in fall 2008.

A chain representative did not return messages left Wednesday, but Erkelens and Olson Auctioneers said it will offer the restaurant's equipment for sale at 10 a.m. Oct. 29 at 188 S. Rio Grande St. A sale preview is set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28, according to the auctioneer's Web site.

At The Counter, customers could pay $10 or so for a burger (fries and drinks were extra) and choose from dozens of different gourmet toppings, with more than 300,000 possible combinations in all.
