Davis County a 'recovery zone?'
FARMINGTON (Davis County Clipper) — No, Davis County is not being lumped with New Orleans in terms of needing any sort of recovery bailout.
But a resolution signed by the Davis County Commission could clear the way for new federal Build America Bonds.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is “a new form of bond that allows us much lower interest cost on projects that may help stimulate the economy,” says County Clerk/Auditor Steve Rawlings.
“The money we’re going to use to do our administration building would be used for that purpose,” he said.
The $8.2 million facility is planned to replace the existing Memorial Courthouse – at least in that function. While a final decision hasn’t been made, discussion by the County Commission and county officials has centered on keeping the north, most historic portion, built in 1932, including the facade. The two newer portions would be razed.
The new building is set to be built farther south on the county campus, taking space currently used by the health department, headquarters library, and some parking.
“It gives us a real break on the total cost of the bonds,” Rawlings said. “We are in an economy recovery zone. The county has been slowed down by the economic downtown. Doing some building” would help provide jobs, economic stimulus, he said.
