Deal close on development that could add 26K people to Vineyard

(Daily Herald) The long and winding road to rejuvenating the old Geneva Steel property is entering a straightaway of sorts.

The town of Vineyard as well as landowner Anderson Geneva and other stakeholders are close to settling on terms that will give up to $300 million in tax breaks over 40 years to develop the 1,000-plus acres on the shore of Utah Lake.

"Developing it will basically create a new town," Vineyard planner Nathan Crane said. Crane added that up to 26,000 new people are expected to live in the area when the project is complete.

The people come later though. First is the industry and light manufacturing that will be brought in near the 1600 North area known as Phase 1.

The $300 million in tax breaks will be handled through an Urban Development Authority. It will be used for things such as infrastructure and incentives to bring employers in.

Crane told county commissioners on Tuesday that the development will require 13.5 miles of sewer lines, 10 miles of water lines and 12 miles of storm drains. That doesn't include the miles of roads.
