Deseret Industries may relocate Sugar House branch
(Sugar House Journal) The LDS Church’s Division of Welfare Services has announced plans to close the Deseret Industries thrift store, located on 2234 Highland Drive, and relocate it to the old Circuit City store on 724 East 2100 South. The Sugar House location is the oldest facility in the Deseret Industry system.
The announcement was made by architect Craig Ames, Partner at PGA & W Architects and Randy Mendenhall, project manager for the Deseret Industries, during the Aug. 5 Sugar House Community Council meeting.
Plans include removing the historic mansion that houses Bodell-Van Drimmelen & Associates Appraisers Consultants and acquiring the property located on 774 East 2100 South, northeast of the former Circuit City property. The parcels are both under contract.
“It has been a top priority to relocate in Sugar House for 10 years,” said Mendenhall. “The Sugar House store is the oldest in our system.”
According to Ames, the current Sugar House Deseret Industries location does not have adequate square footage to meet the needs of the thrift store, as it is a three-story building that lacks the space to sufficiently process items. Traffic congests quickly in and around the building, particularly on Saturdays.
