Downtown Murray looks to re-energize its image

(Murray Journal) With a new master plan in the works, and fresh grant money in the city's pocket, big changes could be coming to downtown Murray. Thanks to the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, Murray has received three grants to help revitalize the downtown area.

One is a marketing grant for $2,000 to help court potential investors, the second a professional development grant for $2,000 that assisted the city in co-sponsoring an economic development symposium, and the third is a sponsorship grant for $800 to train employees in economic development.

"We truly value our partnership with EDCU," said Tim Tingey, Murray economic development director. "They've collaborated with us in the past and have recognized the importance of revitalizing the downtown."

City officials have started with a master plan and have brought together a variety of city and community advocates that include potential investors, stakeholders and property owners to talk about transportation and other issues involved with the renovating.

"We've seen a lot of interest, and hope to get some meetings finalized for late spring or early summer," Tingey said.

Transportation seems to be a key issue, and ideas like a Bus Rapid Transit system have been considered.
