Eagle Mountain recreation center edges closer to bond vote
(Daily Herald) Eagle Mountain has edged closer to getting a recreation center -- maybe.
Council members voted this week to have city staff prepare a bond resolution for a $9.5 million recreational facility as proposed by the municipal parks and recreation board.
The council likely will vote on the prepared resolution on April 6. If the resolution is passed at that time, voters will have a chance to voice their opinion about the indoor facility and an outdoor pool on June 22.
If there is no commercial or residential growth, the bond would increase property tax on the median residence by $100 a year or double the current city property tax.
City staff said Eagle Mountain is expected to increase its growth by 250 homes next year.
Many on the council felt that it was time to hear from the voters themselves through the bond election.
"We are still speaking for the people, and the people want to have an opportunity to voice their opinion," said Councilman Nathan Ochsenhirt.
The concept of a recreation center has been in the works for two years and includes an indoor facility and an outdoor pool. The total cost for this proposal is estimated at $9.5 million. Both the pool and the indoor facility would be approximately $5 million each to build. City staff emphasized that now is the time to bond because interest rates are low.
