EB Co. outlines mixed-use development for Mapleton City

(Daily Herald) Although a necessary boundary-adjustment decision still hangs in the air, Ensign-Bickford Company representatives laid out plans for a mixed-use development to Mapleton City officials in a work session Tuesday night.

Ensign-Bickford and its joint-venture partner, Presidio Capital, are looking to build up 481 acres of property at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. The land, currently within Spanish Fork limits, has a 50-plus-year history of explosives manufacturing and, as a consequence, a stigma of contamination.

The company is nearing the end of a pollutant cleansing process for the property, and in the meantime has proposed a boundary adjustment that would include the area within Mapleton limits, providing a break in utilities for Ensign-Bickford.

Spanish Fork is ready to support the developers either way, Spanish Fork assistant city manager Seth Perrins said. However, the jury is still out in Mapleton, where the impact on economics, infrastructure and citizen goodwill remains to be seen.
