First phase of Mountain View Corridor will reach Kearns
(Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) The first section of the Mountain View Corridor on the valley’s west side will now stretch further north than expected, all the way to 5400 South in Kearns. That was the decision announced at a Utah Transportation Commission meeting on Oct. 14
Originally, the first phase of the corridor, which will eventually connect Utah and Davis counties with a freeway/highway, was expected to be just 10 miles long, running from Redwood Road in Bluffdale to 9000 South. Now, officials with the Utah Department of Transportation are saying that for the $730 million price tag, an additional five miles can be added, taking the roadway as far north as 5400 South.
"The change in design to frontage roads, along with lower material prices and lower labor rates will allow us to stretch the project farther to the north," said Teri Newell, UDOT project manager.
The federal government has approved the environmental-impact statement for the corridor. All the property has been purchased or donated up to 9000 South. With the realization that the project will stretch to 5400 South, Newell and her team are now hoping to obtain property for the five mile extension.
ChamberWest President Alan Anderson stated in a release that "This is great news for the greater west-side. Over the next four years, $730 million in construction jobs and materials, improved west-side transportation and the beginning of a west-side freeway to assist with the future economic development has been given the green light."
