Granite Block developer improves landscape, offers apology for delay
(Sugar House Journal) The controversial “crater” on the corner of Highland Drive and 2100 South in Sugar House has been fenced off, backfilled and landscaped. Gone are the remnants of the old buildings that were razed to make way for owner/developer Craig Mecham’s redevelopment project. The property will continue to be maintained by Mecham until the economy eases and financing is available to build the high-end condominium, office building and shopping space.
“We moth balled the project until we can see a better picture,” said Mecham. “We do see some signs of change and that is primarily in the condominium market that’s the driving force behind this. So we have kind of a wait and see attitude about this right now.”
Once the redevelopment project is complete, Mecham estimates it will triple the revenue for the shopping district. “I offer my apologies to the local merchants for this delay and I’m convinced we will all benefit in the long run,” said Mecham.
