Grants available for business and economic development in rural areas

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for business and community development grants to help rural communities create wealth, attract residents and become economically self-sustaining.

The grants are for rural cities with 50,000 or fewer residents. They can be used for economic planning, technical assistance and training. Applicants must represent public bodies, nonprofits, Indian Tribes or cooperatives with members who are primarily rural residents. Priority will be given to applicants who best demonstrate strong regional or multi-jurisdictional collaboration, leadership capacity and represent diverse communities. Applicants must have significant expertise in the activities proposed and the financial strength to ensure objectives of the proposed grant can be accomplished. There is $2.48 million available.

Applications are due June 28. More information on how to apply for the grant, called the USDA Rural Business Opportunity Grant, is at www.rurdev.usda.gov/rbs/coops/rbog.htm.
