FARMINGTON – Harmons Grocery Stores and CenterCal Properties have executed an agreement to build a new 68,015-square-foot Harmons flagship store to anchor the 1,000,000-square-foot Station Park project in Farmington, located at the intersection of Interstate 15, Highway 89, Legacy Parkway and the Frontrunner Commuter Rail.
Locally-owned and operated Harmons Grocery Stores anticipates breaking ground on two new stores in Utah in 2010, including the Farmington location. Construction on the buildings is planned to be complete in 2011. The second store will be located in downtown Salt Lake City in block 74 of the City Creek Center.
“We’re very excited about taking our next big steps in building upon Harmons’ 77-year history in Utah,” said Bob Harmon, vice president for the customer at Harmons. “These two new stores will be a paradise for people who appreciate having access to the freshest foods that the state and region have to offer. Our emphasis will continue to be upon local foods, prepared in our stores by our food experts.”
The newest Harmons stores, will build upon many of the successful features for which the locally-owned chain is known: a significant percent of the store dedicated to fresh foods including organic and conventional produce, the freshest all-natural meats, artisan breads and many more items made daily by the associates at Harmons. Everywhere the eye stops there will be state-of-the-art touches to support the fresh food philosophy.
“This will be a store for foodies,” said Bob Harmon, vice president for the customer at Harmons. “People who like food, are going to want to hang out there for sure.”
These two new stores are a big step for the local supermarket company, and Harmons’ President Dean Peterson, is confident in Harmons' strategy: to focus on fresh quality food at a reasonable price. Since 1932, Harmons has grown from a fruit stand to 13 stores and is ranked as the 16th largest privately-owned company headquartered in Utah.
Harmons, currently employs 2,230 people and invests $71 million in Utah’s economy through salaries, benefits and training for its associates. The company anticipates increasing its payroll by approximately 15 percent in 2011. Harmons employs 150 to 200 associates in each store including chefs, butchers, bakers and food.
In 2008 Harmons invested more than $246,000,000 in goods and services from more than 700 locally-owned food distributors, manufacturers and service providers in Utah. “A large percentage of those dollars stayed in the state because of our support of local businesses,” added Harmon.
Harmons was the 2008 recipient of the Ernst & Young Community Legacy Award for its support of local charities throughout the year including local PTAs, Special Olympics Utah, the National MS Society, the Utah Food Bank and others.
