Hyde Park project still in limbo: Multi-family condo developer pushing for zone change

(Herald Journal) An upscale retail-residential-office development planned for Hyde Park is stuck in limbo.

Valley developer Glen Thompson proposed the project, dubbed Hyde Park Commons, last summer. Located on 20 acres on U.S. Highway 91 near Hyde Park Lane, the development would include three-story buildings with shops on the bottom and office space above. About 100 condominiums are part of the plan.

Former Mayor Dave Kooyman liked the mixed-use concept, but ultimately recommended that consideration of the project be put off until 2010, when a new mayor and councilmembers took office.

Kooyman is out and former councilman Bryan Cox is now mayor.

Cox is against Hyde Park Commons, objecting to the multi-family residential element.

“It seems out of place in Hyde Park,” he said.

Last year, and now, most officials and residents do not support the project, said Councilman Charles Wheeler.

“Most people are not ready to jump on,” Wheeler said.
