Layton's Doug and Emmy's restaurant relocating in 2010
LAYTON (Deseret News) — Don't expect to go to Doug and Emmy's for a New Year's breakfast.
The Layton eatery, descended from the same stock as nearby Sill's Cafe, has received its walking papers. It's the latest of the South Main Street businesses to make plans to pull up roots.
With construction on the $97 million southern Layton I-15 interchange ramping up, Doug and Emmy's, which has been in its location at 200 S. Main since May 1992, will lose a significant portion of its property.
Rather than begin a new tax year in January, the owners, Doug Madsen and Emmy Criddle, have opted to shut down and reopen their restaurant in the town of Mayfield, Sanpete County, said Matt Criddle, who has grown up working with his mom, Emmy Criddle, at Doug and Emmy's.
"My mom has (worked in the restaurants) her whole life," Matt Criddle said. "It's time to venture out and get it built up somewhere else."
Matt Criddle's future is up in the air at this point, though he has solid work for the rest of 2009.
"I don't know what I'm going to do," he said. "It's very weird."
John Sill, owner of Sill's Cafe, and Emmy Criddle are both children of Golden Sill, who started Sill's Cafe in 1957. Both worked for their father at Sill's.
