New fire station sought in Logan
(Herald Journal) Logan city’s fire chief says now is the time to build a new fire station in the city’s southwest end to accommodate new residential growth and increased emergency call volume.
On Tuesday, Logan Mayor Randy Watts announced during his state of the city address the need for the new station and his goal of building it during his second term.
Fire Chief Mark Meaker on Wednesday released a five-page memo, outlining the criteria for building the station without purchasing any new fire fighting apparatus or hiring additional staff. Meaker says new growth on 600 South and 1800 South to the west of 1000 West and new home construction in north Providence means thousands of additional 911 calls from the area each year.
“In the last three years, our overall call volume has increased by approximately 20 percent,” said Meaker, “with the vast majority of that increase coming from growth in the southwest area of the city.”
