New road means big things for Herriman
(South Valley Journal) It’s been a busy summer in the city of Herriman. In June city and county officials broke ground on the J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center. July 1 it was the new library’s shovel turning day. And Aug. 5, Mayor J. Lynn Crane and developer James Lee Sorenson cut the ribbon on a brand new Main Street, home to both facilities.
Before the ceremony Mayor J. Lynn Crane spoke of the long term transportation plans city leaders established when the city incorporated 10 years ago.
“It’s coming to fruition, some of that planning,” he said. “The road will be a wonderful highway, the primary entrance to our small city.”
Along with Crane, Sorenson, CEO of the Sorenson Group, which has developed Rosecrest along with much of Herriman over those years, was on hand to mark the occasion.
“It’s good to be involved in this. With all that is happening on Wall Street, it’s neat to see something focused on Main Street,” he said.
Crane and Sorenson were the first to break in the new road – driving a cherry-red convertible, loaned for the occasion by Riverton Motors, through the red ribbon – along with a police escort.
The one-mile road, which took 10 months and $8 million to complete, provides access to the Herriman Towne Center , a mixed use 375-acre development which will eventually include, along with the recreation center, library and the new Silver Crest Elementary School, 2,000 homes along with retail space.
The 114-foot road which begins at 5500 West 12600 South shifts the main entrance into Herriman to 12800 South. It features a 20-foot island and 4-foot bike lane. Landscaping should begin on the road in early September.
