Park City houses priced in the $200,000s: 'It's like a gift from heaven'
(Park Record) Brigitte and Mac Macaalay have been married for 27 years, leaving their homeland of the Philippines about a decade ago for the United States.
The wife, 50 years old and a jewelry salesperson at Walmart, and the husband, who is 56 years old and a bellman at the Deer Valley Club, have rented in the Park City area for a decade. They have never owned a place.
The Macaalays on Friday, though, were among the winners in a City Hall housing lottery held to select buyers for the Snow Creek Cottages work force housing development off S.R. 224 outside the Park Avenue police station.
"We've been renting for 10 years now. It's like a gift from heaven," Brigitte Macaalay said in an interview after the couple was selected in the random drawing, held in the Park City Council chambers.
They will move into their new place from a rental unit close to The Canyons.
The couple was one of 35 entries into the closely watched lottery, the first of its kind held by City Hall. The Snow Creek Cottages are City Hall's most ambitious brick-and-mortar housing development, encompassing 13 two-bedroom or three-bedroom houses.
The other winners on Friday were of varying ages and professions. To take part in the lottery, they could not earn $120,000 or more each year, and each of them filled out extensive paperwork inquiring about their finances before they were allowed to participate.
