PG still grappling with accessory apartment issue

PLEASANT GROVE (Daily Herald)  -- After months of discussion and public input, Pleasant Grove City is closer to having a decision made about accessory apartments. Currently illegal in the city, council members have been considering allowing the apartments with certain restrictions.

Community Development Director Ken Young said the city will review a proposed ordinance to regulate limited accessory apartments within the community on Tuesday in the City Council work session.

He said the issue will be scheduled for a public hearing and possible adoption sometime after that date.

Some of the issues being considered, Young said, are fines, fees, what other communities have done, costs of enforcement and inspections and whether the character of the city will be maintained if the apartments are allowed.

Young pointed out that there are currently many accessory apartments in the city.

"High enough fines for violations need to be established. We need to beef up our enforcement," Young said.

Keeping track of the number of accessory apartments and how the city staff members will know, if they need to know, when occupants move, are other issues that will be taken into consideration.
