Planning commission fails to recommend zone change
(Daily Herald) The Pointe Performing Arts Academy submitted an application to Highland in order to build a dance studio on the southwest corner of 5600 West and 11000 North (SR 92). However, it failed to get a recommendation from the Highland Planning Commission for both a zone change and conditional use permit on Aug. 25.
Two main concerns were brought up. First, the traffic it would generate along a major arterial road where 35,000 cars pass every day would create unsafe conditions for the students. Secondly, approval would open up a commercial zone west of where Highland's master plan dictates.
"We would like the applicant to locate in the Town Center," Highland Zoning Administrator Lonnie Crowell said.
More than 30 people were in attendance on both sides of the issue. Close residents were vocal about their opposition. Many parents of students of the school, now located in Lindon, expressed their support.
The application will now go to the City Council for their consideration.
