Rock Canyon neighbors clashing over building, business

PROVO (Daily Herald) -- An addition that's larger than the original house is causing some conflict in the Rock Canyon neighborhood.

Neighbors are worried that homeowner Gaynor Brunson, who runs a recording studio out of his home, is going to bring in more people than should be on residential streets because of how large the structure going up just east of his home is. Brunson doesn't deny that it will be a recording studio, but said what he's doing is perfectly legal and some of his neighbors are simply spreading their fears as fact.

Whatever the situation, all of the involved parties will meet today to give neighbors a chance to ask questions, Brunson a chance to answer them and Provo officials a chance to clarify the law in this situation.

First, the neighborhood perspective. Neighborhood chairman Sid Sandberg said people who live near the Brunson home on 2620 North are concerned with the size of the structure and its commercial use. Brunson Brothers Recording Studio already operates out of Brunson's home; the home occupation permit allows businesses in residential areas provided no people are employed who do not live there, the business use does not exceed more than half of the property, no more than two customers per hour can visit the home and there should be no signs. One condition also requires that home occupation "not alter the residential character of the premises or unreasonably disturb the peace and quiet, including radio and television reception, of the neighborhood by reason of color, design, materials, construction, lighting, sounds, noises or vibrations."
