Spanish Fork-Springville Airport expansion would require road changes
SPANISH FORK (Deseret News) — A planned expansion of the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport would require road changes to the west of the facility, but officials say they will go along with residents' desires on those changes.
The airstrip runs northwest and southwest, with the southwest portion near Main Street. It's so close that planes are allowed to take off from that end, but they can't land that close to the street. The airport is striped to guide pilots in farther down the runway.
Planners want to move the airport runway away from Main Street north of I-15 and make it 300 feet longer, which would take out a chunk of 800 West. That would require re-routing the traffic that normally uses 800 West.
Rancher Eldon Neves said he would rather see proposed road changes take a different route than the airport board has suggested.
Plans now would lop off 500 feet from the airstrip near Main, moving it away from the street, and then extending it 800 feet on the other end, airport manager Cris Child said. To do that, it would require blocking 800 West off between 5000 South and 4000 South.
To replace that access west of the airport, the plan is to extend 1450 West from 5000 South to 4000 South.
