Sugar Factory Arts Complex gets funding from city
(West Jordan Journal) The Sugar Factory Arts Complex is taking a giant leap forward with the city council’s 4-2 vote on Dec. 9 in favor of the use of up to $1 million in city impact fees on the project.
The Sugar Factory Arts Campus Board had first thought they could fund the campus without a city contribution through grants, but discovered the city needed to first put up seed money before any entity, including the county, would consider granting money to the campus.
“We have guidelines from the county,” said Nola Duncan, board chairwoman. “We have their preliminary draft that tells us there will be criteria, but there won’t be first money. They need to see the [city’s] commitment first.”
The community and council have been torn over the issue of whether the city should be responsible for partially funding the project.
Most of those who came to speak at the Nov. 17 citizen comment period, when the matter was first brought before the council, spoke in favor of the proposal.
