Sugar House called Utah's best city by 'This Old House'
(Sugar House Journal) Having an old home is a good thing for Sugar House residents, especially now that the city has been named Utah’s best city by “This Old House” magazine. The cozy bungalow and cottage-style homes that are a staple of the community were called a “first-time homebuyer’s delight” by the magazine, which named one city for each state in the nation and one in Canada.
The magazine called the area a recession-proof housing market because of it’s preservation of historic homes, most of which are affordable. The walk-able community is also home to Westminster College and conveniently close to the University of Utah and has a reputation for having an eclectic downtown area full of funky shops and restaurants.
One Highland Drive resident who wanted to remain nameless lives in a house built in 1928. She has lived in her home for 10 years but the home was originally built for a KSL Radio Show promotion. Her grandfather moved to Sugar House in 1909 and she enjoys holding onto the history of the area.
“I’ve kept everything in this home vintage,” she said. “I’ve kept as many original things as I could, the original cabinetry and things like that.”
Russ Terry is a resident who has lived in Sugar House since 1983. His home was built in 1922. “I like the trees here. The people are real and down-to-earth and these homes hold their value. When we moved in, it was slow-paced here and felt like home,” he said.
