Swaner Eco Center first Utah project to achieve Platinum LEED certification
Wed, 07/15/2009 - 12:27
The U.S. Green Building Council will recognize the Swaner Eco Center, a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Park City facility, with a Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. As the first Utah building to earn Platinum certification in the new construction division, the Eco Center was designed as a teaching tool for environmental awareness. The green elements are visible and transparent to people who will visit. The insulation which is made out of shredded blue jeans demonstrates the show-and-tell approach to teaching eco-friendly teaching. CRSA was the architecture firm that designed the center. The architects focused the design on water, air, earth and sun. The building has cisterns that collect storm water, windows that use cross breezes to cool the building, renewable wood products and recycled materials and photovoltaic roof panels to convert the sun’s energy into electricity.
