Taylorsville City hosting economic development forum
(Taylorsville/Kearns Journal) Taylorsville City officials have discussions of growth and redevelopment plans on the agenda for the second annual Economic Development Forum, to be held Thursday, Oct. 1 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Salt Lake Community College Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
“The event is geared toward anyone who owns a business in the city,” said Mayor Russ Wall. “The purpose is to provide them with information and connections that would allow them to be successful in their business.”
What began several years ago as the mayor’s roundtable event with local businesses has developed into a city-sponsored conference involving elected officials, city staff, developers, commercial businesses and non-profit entities.
“The expectations for this year are that the event will be equal to or better than last year,” said Economic Development Director Keith Snarr.
The full agenda includes presentations from the Utah Department of Transportation describing current road projects in the city, and representatives from Sorenson Communications, Nelson Laboratories, ICU Medical, and Unified State Laboratories presenting their business views of the city. Council Chairman Lynn Handy will be giving an update on the city’s urban renewal project areas and Mayor Russ Wall will present an annual report.
Taylorsville Exchange Club President David Richardson is scheduled to announce the recipient of the annual “Golden Deeds Award,” which recognizes dedicated volunteers who selflessly give many hours of their time and talents toward improving their communities.
“We ran a little long last year so we hope to shorten it to allow ample time for questions and answers as well as networking at the end,” said Snarr.
Snarr said several ideas emerged from last year’s event, including the Small Business Success Workshop held in April and the new redevelopment project study areas.
“We found out that the city was experiencing growth even in the downturned economy,” said Snarr.
Breakfast will be served, so an RSVP is required to attend the event. Interested residents are asked to contact Jean Ashby at 801-963-5400 or jashby@taylorsvilleut.gov.
“We want to emphasize that all are invited and anyone who is interested in business or economic development in Taylorsville will find this a very worthwhile event,” said Snarr.
