USU landscape students planning for Providence

(Herald Journal) Providence has always been a bedroom community for Logan, but in recent years it’s become almost an extension of its larger neighbor.

Commercial districts in the two towns blend together seamlessly along State Road 165. Even the “Welcome to Providence” sign is somewhat hidden.

“It’s kind of an invisible city,” said David Bell, an associate professor at Utah State University in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning.

Bell is leading a group of students who hope to change this.

During a week-long design project that wrapped up Friday, a number of LAEP majors looked at how to give Providence a stronger identity.

Among their suggestions are building an arch over the community’s main entrance, making building facades consistent and planting the same trees along streets.

Devin Christensen, a junior who worked on the project, said Providence has a lot of character that just needs to be expanded.
